WHY WE NEED A SOLAR RAPID SHUTDOWN DEVICE FOR SOLAR PANELS?
Solar rapid shutdown devices are necessary to enhance the safety of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. When a solar panel generates electricity, it can create a hazardous voltage and current that poses a risk to people and property. If a solar panel is damaged, or if maintenance or repairs need to be performed on the system, it's important to shut down the flow of electricity to reduce the risk of injury or fire.
Rapid shutdown devices are designed to quickly and effectively shut down the flow of electricity from the solar panels to the inverter, which converts the DC electricity generated by the panels to AC electricity that can be used in the home or business. This can be accomplished through various methods, such as through the use of specialized switches or inverters that can isolate the system from the electrical grid.
In addition to improving safety, rapid shutdown devices can also help ensure compliance with electrical codes and regulations. In the United States, the National Electrical Code (NEC) requires the use of rapid shutdown devices for solar PV systems installed on buildings. Other countries may have similar regulations in place.
Overall, solar rapid shutdown devices are essential for enhancing the safety and compliance of solar PV systems.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF RAPID SHUTDOWN DEVICES
There are a number of different types of rapid shutdown devices available, each with its own unique features and benefits. Here are a few of the most common types: 1. Module-Level Rapid Shutdown Devices: These devices are installed at the individual panel level, and allow for the rapid shutdown of each panel in the system. Module-level devices are often the most effective way to achieve rapid shutdown, as they allow for precise control over each panel. 2. String-Level Rapid Shutdown Devices: These devices are installed at the string level, and allow for the rapid shutdown of multiple panels at once. String-level devices are often less expensive than module-level devices, but may not offer the same level of control. 3. Inverter-Based Rapid Shutdown Devices: These devices are built into the inverter, and allow for the rapid shutdown of the entire system. Inverter-based devices are often less expensive than module-level or string-level devices, but may not offer the same level of precision.
HOW DO WE MEET NEC REQUIREMENTS FOR RSDS
In accordance with Section 690.12 of the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC), solar systems are required to have a module-level rapid shutdown, whereby all conductors within a 1-ft boundary of the array must be reduced to 80V or less within 30 seconds of rapid shutdown initiation.
Our offered module-level rapid shutdown solutions are compatible with all types of solar modules, including the communication cable version. These solutions include:
▶ 24VDC communication cable with an emergency button switch for RSD initiation
